Difficult Conversations (and How to Have Them)

A project to enable people to have difficult conversations.

We are hoping this will evolve into a series of talks / workshops.

Below is a list of resources referenced in the first talk.

Resources

Accidental Courtesy: Daryl Davis, Race & America’ on YouTube
A documentary about Daryl Davis and the conversations he has had with white supremacists - making friends with Klu Klux Klan Grand Masters leading many to leave the Klan. A must watch for anyone who thinks 'you cant talk to a racist'. This is not Street Epistemology but it is definitely a serious of difficult conversations and shows how rapport is possible even with people who would express hatred for you.

Street Epistemology free online course : https://www.navigatingbeliefs.com

An excellent free course on the principles and practise of Street Epistemology that you can explore at your own pace

Further SE resources and information can be found on this website.

‘A Manual for Creating Atheists’ by Peter Boghossian on World of Books
Where SE was first mentioned, although this is primarily about faith based beliefs, a lot of it holds true for other beliefs

‘How to Have Impossible Conversations’ by Peter Boghossian on World of Books

In this book Boghossian goes beyond challenging faith based beliefs, he doesnt describe the methods in this book as Street Epistemology but acknowledges SE uses methods in this book. Much of the Exeter Community Alliance's 'Difficult Conversations (and how to have them)' talk/workshop are based on this book.

Anthony Magnabosco's YouTube channel

Magnabosco is one of the founders of the SE movement. He is President of Street Epistemology International. Chris Wood attended one of his workshops when he came to the UK, that was one of the inspirations for this project. His videos of conversations he has with random people can be fascinating. He exemplifies how we can talk to people who have beliefs very different from ours.
